In a historic move, Paris has reopened the River Seine for public swimming, a privilege not granted since 1923. This initiative is the culmination of an extensive clean-up effort, spurred by the city's use of the river during the 2024 Paris Olympics. From now until August 31, over 1,000 swimmers can enjoy designated swim zones at three sites along the Seine within the city. Additionally, 14 more swimming areas are being introduced along the Seine and Marne rivers outside Paris. The success of the Olympic events held on the river, despite initial concerns over water quality due to rain, has significantly boosted public confidence in the Seine's safety for recreational activities.

Authorities have made substantial investments to ensure the river's cleanliness and safety. Tens of thousands of homes have been connected to the sewer system, wastewater treatment plants have been upgraded, and large rainwater storage basins have been constructed to prevent overflow. Paris Deputy Mayor Pierre Rabadan emphasized that the water quality now meets safety standards, allowing the public to enjoy the Seine once again. Daily water quality tests will be conducted throughout the swimming season, with safety flags indicating whether swimming sites are safe for use. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Paris's ongoing efforts to revitalize the Seine and make it a central part of the city's vibrant urban life.
